Whilst at university, I used this basic freehand plastic turning technique on a number of occasions to rapidly create plastic parts and prototype components. This technique enables you to work with both high levels of precision, and a creative flare that allows complex and organic forms to be created.
With plastics you can create glossy and even lens clear parts in virgin materials, that won’t easily scuff or sink back like painted and lacquered parts will. With turned Perspex parts you also have the benefit of being able to pre or post process parts; adding complexity to blank billets to be turned, or putting in fine detailed line work as the final touches on a laser cutter.
This project was undertaken when I was still a student at Teesside University, and most of the filming was done in the Cook building’s design workshop. If you plan to undertake this project, please ensure you are competent with all of the machinery; and in the case of university workshops, consult your head workshop manager first.
