The effort to repair, re-texture and re-color all of the various plastic parts (midnight blue and black) continued with vengeance over the past 10 days, with the biggest successes being the completion of the major dash components. I also got deep into the effort to restore the fender flares which need a lot of work. Finally I also received the Danfoss 400W 12V A/C compressor (which translates into 1500BTUs which is only a small fraction of what a crank driven A/C compressor is capable of putting out but should be sufficient for my needs) and I also started to order a few of the other components that will be necessary to complete the whole A/C system.
Note: In this video segment I mentioned that the US mk1 GTI had wider rear fender flares at the back in comparison to the Euro GTI and this is not the case: the US spec rear flares are a little longer with a slightly different shape but a heat gun and some creativity would allow a Euro rear fender to be mounted. Not true of the front fender though as the US spec GTI had a much larger spoiler and required a larger front fender flare as a result. I am glad that I chose to re-use the OEM flares as they fit perfectly – and will look new after I am done restoring them.
